Everything changes in life. It's one of the universal constants we take for granted. At some point, things have a tendency to end. Gloom led into Tremulous. I'm fairly sure that around that time, ten years ago, a similar crowd of people were upset about the direction that Gloom's development was headed into, and similarly resisted the changes brought on by Tremulous. Gloom had its time, Tremulous had its time, and both were enjoyed by large communities of people. It's futile to expect the old developers to release 1.2, considering that they now have other concerns in life, such as jobs or working on a doctorate degree. Five, ten years from now, when we're in the same position, the same thing will happen to us. Change is one of those things we must all accept at some point in our lives. The things you grew up around aren't constant, and at the same time, the nostalgia should not prevent you from enjoying the things to come.
I'm aware that people might think the TremZ threads are an enormous insult to the original developers. None of that was ever intended by us. In fact, I would like to talk to some of the old developers, to know what their views are on our project, and if they'd be interested in working alongside us. The silence doesn't have to happen, nor does any sort of animosity, explicit or implied.
The Tremulous community is a strong one, regardless of what I perceive as its eternal pessimism. It has survived for years, and it can continue to survive as part of the TremZ community. No longer do we need to have this division between the new crowd and the old guard. I envision a community in which status is determined not by how long you've been around for, not by who you're connected with, but rather by your individual merits, capacity, and willingness to contribute to the community as a whole. This is the sort of community that I would like to build for TremZ, and our development team already revolves around a basic principle of meritocracy.
As I've said before, I understand that there are those that choose to stay behind, for one reason or another. If you don't want to support us or become part of our crowd, that's fine. I will still hold out a welcoming hand. However, there's little else I can do for you. The general opinion seems to be that people will mostly be moving onto TremZ after it's released. The last remaining Tremulous servers, on GPP and 1.1, will likely drop from having twenty active players on at peak times, to not having peak times at all. In a few years time, the final Tremulous servers will consist of people that found Tremulous in their Linux repositories or off outdated gaming blog posts. They will connect for a few minutes, notice nobody is around to play with, and disconnect, leaving yet another empty game of ATCS. This bleak future would have happened even if TremZ never existed. To think otherwise is deluding yourself. If this sort of Tremulous still appeals to you, enjoy your empty servers. I still think you'd have more fun on TremZ.
