Hello,

maybe you know me as the owner of the most popular gpp server R Unlimited CZ, or as author of several different mods and maps.

Because computer games are my life and Tremulous dying, I decided to make a radical thing. I left my job and started working on a direct sequel of the game.

The site looks professional and I'm loving what I see in 'Media'! A little thing: you misspelled 'biting' as 'bitting' on the front page in the 'Aliens' box.

I do have some questions though and I hope you understand that I ask because I care:

  • What is Capella?
  • Do you have licenses to base the 'themed maps' on these movies/games?
  • Isn't offering money for community made models getting a little ahead of yourself? It works for TF2 because they already have a huge community and infrastructure in place
  • How much of the AAA game engine will be ioquake3 code?

These are only the first questions to occur to me, and there will no doubt be more that you have probably (or hopefully) asked yourself. I don't want to discourage what seems like a potentially great project and only hope you don't regret leaving your job for this. I can't stress enough how much I like the art and hope you continue to create stuff for us to see.

We do not have FAQ yet, so question are welcomed.

Theme maps: No, we don't have licenses. Our theme maps will be inspired, not same with same name. So if you will see map name "Pandora", there will be floating hills and giant tree, you will know that it will have something to do with one popular movie, even without license.

Community made models: It will work after game will be released and these assets will be marked like unofficial.

How much of the AAA game engine will be ioquake3 code?: None. Everything will be rewritten. It is not even possible to port this game to top engine without complete rewrite.

You should consider donating some of your profit to Tremulous Project.
Though, I don't think you can make money worth your time and effort.
1) Overused concept.
2) Many competitors (e.g. Natural Selection 2).
3) The title you choose has no benefits. Tremulous already have a small community. Even then what remained of the Tremulous Community will not consider it as a true successor as you have never been a part of the Tremulous Development Team. Moreover, since it is a commercial title, you may have trouble with copyright owners as Tremulous is a very generic name.

Assuming you do not do it solely for money, good luck. Being able to do what you like is priceless after all.

This makes me uneasy. DUN BECOME HOMELESS PLEASE.

Apart from that, the screens look fantastic. Like people have said, you have a very coherent and pretty art style. I'm looking forward to seeing the granger.

I realise from the pictures that you'll be adding new aliens and such. But at a basic level, will your game play more like GPP or 1.1? (please say 1.1)

Either way, if you manage to get a decent stable release out there, I'll buy it.

also, you seem to be mistaken on your assumption no one will care if it is commercial.  see "nexuiz".

Of course. We cannot use anything from Tremulous 1 (code, assets). Code is incompatible and assets are in low quality for our goal. So we have to make everything from scratch.

Even if it is not trademarked yet, Tremulous Team can always void your trademark application (at least in most countries). This might give you lots of headache.

Of course. We cannot use anything from Tremulous 1 (code, assets). Code is incompatible and assets are in low quality for our goal. So we have to make everything from scratch.

how do you have media that "looks like tremulous but better" if you are not using any assets from tremulous?  are you saying you didnt resize/sharpen some textures?  everything is built 100% from scratch, not even using trem's assets as a starting point?

Using Tremulous models as a starting point does not make much sense, as they are incredibly low poly compared to what rotacak will most likely aim for. He and his team will, quite literally, build the game from the ground up. It will be inspired by Tremulous, and share Tremulous's name and central gameplay goals, but other than that, expect everything else will be built from scratch.

We did not make trademark application - it would be probably denied, because of existing game. And I think, that this name is positive for everyone. We choose this name because - it is Tremulous 2 and we know that T1 will die soon, nobody planning new version and that game will be forgotten. With this name can everything live longer, even with credits to original developers.

Darklegion Development is the pseudoname of the collection of all contributors. use of "copyright (c) 666 Darklegion Development" is a fancy replacement of "copyright (c) 666 all respective owners".

Yes, exactly. We will release some building process videos, so you can see it.

There seems to be a misunderstanding here about what constitutes a derived work. It does not matter if you draw over the original or if you drew on a blank canvas while looking at the original. The thing that makes it a derived work is that it's similar enough to the original work that any reasonable person would look at it and conclude that it was based on it.

So it is a derived work and, in that sense, was not built 100% from scratch. That doesn't mean I don't like what you've done, on the contrary I think the art is a massive improvement.

Looks are debatable, so there's no reason to go into a discussion here. But be aware that a Tremulous remake that is built on top of another non-ioquake engine will never truly behave like Tremulous. Take Counterstike as an example: Most of the 1.6 players never got used to the Source Engine remake just because weapons and movement behaved slightly different. In the same way Quake 4 (idTech 4) couldn't replace Quake 3 (idTech 3) even though it looked a lot better than its direct predecessor. Unvanquished doesn't aim to be a simple remake and will (hopefully) take the genre in a new direction but on the other hand is a true fork of the Tremulous code so weapons and classes will behave exactly like in Tremulous.

i wish you the best of luck with this project, it looks very nice. i have a good feeling about it particularly because kharnov is not involved with it. :D

but why not simply change the name, change up the models more, and just call it a "spiritual" successor of tremulous or somesuch, so you don't have to deal with all this name/copyright/trademark junk going on?
