Visual change to helmet
« on: September 24, 2006, 09:22:53 pm »

The engineer who designed that protective helmet deserves to be slapped. >_> I suggest a slight visual change to the helmet, to make it cover the whole top of the head instead of being a fancy headband.

After all, the light armour does a good job of protecting the chest, the battlesuit does a good job of anally protecting every square inch of body... The helmet's protective-lookingness should be comparable.

Always thought the helmet looked good, the open top just makes it look cooler :D.

Some kind of visor added would be better imo, that would explain the floating radar when you get the helmet :P

Edit: just to give you some more material to discuss about, here are some of the previous helmet models

Helmet #1 from basilico's post looks about right. I could take or leave the visor, whatever people prefer.

@kevlarman: good point. I suppose it's only courteous of humans to expose their tasty brains.

Suffice to say, if I were a marine, I think I'd prefer my bike helmet over the standard issue one :P

The first helmet is used by EVERYONE in the other games- doesn't really look that unique. The second one is just no.. the third one looks pretty okay... but still weird.
So I guess I'll have to agree with the first one.

OR...

we all make a competition thread to see who makes the best helmet? And the winner's helmet appears!

I want a helmet that looks like a little kid's bike helmet. And it should be pink to help the aliens see better.

But there should be a camo option: just a headband with no armour bonuses and no radar.

The third helmet in Basilisco's post looks best. It'd be perfect with better texturing, like the first one.

I dunno, imo the third one looks too thick. If you're looking for the ultimate head protection, you may as well buy a Bsuit. Then again, it could look completely different (and mostly for the better) with texturing. #2 solves nothing as the head is still exposed.

@Undeference: about that camo thing... aren't you describing an unhelmeted human player? They have a headband, and no protection.

not a bad idea, but people would be drawing the helmets in 2d while the real thing would have to be modeled in 3d. Would be interesting.

It would be nice if it were easier to tell what equipment a human had just by looking; maybe the textures could have more color variation...

Yeah, I find I never know if the guy I'm attacking has armour or a helmet unless he's using a bsuit (those are kind of hard to miss). larmour looks a lot like unarmoured, and I'm too busy dodging pulse rifle bullets to check if a guy has a helmet or not.

A better helmet would make that easier to see, as for the larmour... not sure. You can't exactly make it bright pink just so aliens notice, but right now it's kinda hard to see.

Those first two pics were made quite a while ago.  The second is actully the same version of it... just someone without the helmet on.  The third picture is part of an entirely new human model I was working on...  which is actually pretty close to completetion, except for lack of a texture.

Thats just the Q3 model 'sarge' head texture.  I put it on there temporarily.  This is a texture I was working on...

Adding a Knightrider kinda red-blip shader to complement the Helmet and to give some reason for the Scanner could work.

/me slapps everyone

Knightrider style lights might have been appropriate if tremulous was a side-scroller for the C64.

The overall subject of this thread seems to be "zOMG! how t3h helmet protects against head attacks with no head protection?!?!?!?!!!!111oneone"

There are various full-head helmets designs out there; the relatively narrow models shown in this thread, wider ones such as those of halo or starship troopers, but whatever. The point is that the helmet protects agains head attacks and provides a radar display. Soooo.... To satisfy these conditions an alternative helmet model could include full head cover and some kind of visor. I prefer overflow's model out of those shown so far...
