Alien Crosshair well I found out where this is and maybe if some Pro comp users ut there DL it, just maybe you could figure a way to make people with this file auto-disconnect. And if that doesn't work atleast this file shows people that an alien crosshair actually has been spreading around.

I like how I get blamed for it. There are a few posts on this forum with links to it, I just pointed some people to those. The extent of client mods I use are a big blue dot crosshair for grangers (very useful... like... really...) and a quieter jetpack so I don't get a headache every time humans reach stage 2.

To make you autodisconnect, just add something like
bind w "disconnect"
to the end of ui/chompers.cfg :)
Of course, that doesn't exactly help, does it.

You also ended a sentence with a preposition.

Add me to the "Why is it such a problem?" camp.

You'll find it in an old little thread called "On Alien crosshairs and other 'hacks'..." that made it back to the front page of General Discussion after being revived recently (but it looks like it's back off). I believe it's also mentioned elsewhere, but can't find any specific threads here.

It's because people can't stand any kind of advantage, even imaginary ones.

I love how admins like Lava say they'll ban people for using them but you can't tell unless you're at their computer.

Why do you care? how long do you think it would take you to find a way to auto disc them (assuming it is even possible) and is it really worth the effort?

The thing is alot of the morons that use chompers hud/persistent radar hud tell the server they're on they're 'testing' it or are using it flat out.

Yes there's no real way to check...but when the average user of these modifications come right out and brag about its use discovering them really isn't that hard for anyone that listens ;)

And why the heck would you want to kick someone for using an alien crosshair? Would you kick them for using a permenant marker to dot the center of the screen?

UUUGGGHHHHH! Bunch of bloody fuckin der der derrs on this forum. I'm going to go out and find a bloody crosshair file just so I can go on some servers and say, "I'm using a crosshair as an alien! Oh god! I'm a hacker! Ban me! Ban me hard!"

Fucking ridiculous.

Sometimes I really think that crosshairs should be added to the alien team in the next version of tremulous.
1 - There will always be people with "dot markers" in the center of the screen
2 - There will always be people accusing others of cheating with dot markers
3 - And above all, as it has been said numerous times, it makes almost no difference, except for the players new to the game (which will still get shouted at for feeding).
So let's have crosshairs, and stop this bickering.

One thing I never understood about the whole marker/tape/whatever excuse...who the fuck does that to a 300+ dollar peice of computer equipment that is used for more than mindless gaming?

I imagine the sticky shit on the back of the tape marker smears and etc and so forth must really fuck up your screen after a time...

or you get use to that shit in the center of your display...

Changing game sounds and models is just as impossible as adding alien crosshairs (it's done almost exactly the same too).

Lots of LCDs come with clear staticky film to protect the screen. One would hope people who mark up their screen are smart enough to use that stuff. On some of that stuff, you can probably even use dry erase markers pretty well. (Now that I think about it, I should get one of those film things for my laptop... I have yet to find something that will remove smears without adding more. But that plastic junk is really easy to clean. lol)

not true, the hud file doesn't have to be in a .pk3, you just have to change a cvar to point to a different file. on a side note, if i did consider alien crosshairs to be cheating, then i would rather have 100 people using crosshairs as they are than having 99 people without crosshairs and 1 person who figured out how to get around the no-crosshair "cheat protection".

These are the same people boasting/proclaiming their use of a modification on servers where admins have openly proclaimed they don't want those modifications used.

Smart?

These people are the kinds of morons that likely use white out on the screen to fix typos. :P

Yes, I know, the same people who zip (.zip) a zip (.pk3), right?

Quote from: "kevlarman"
the hud file doesn't have to be in a .pk3
Neither does anything else. The differences are that zips take up less space and take slightly longer to access (and that if you replace all your pk3s with their contents, you won't be able to play on servers with sv_pure=1).
vms-1.1.0.pk3, data-1.1.0.pk3, all of your maps, ... None of it needs to be in a pk3. If Chompers's crosshairs was distributed as a pk3, more people would probably use and mirror it.

all of those things have to be in a pk3 for you to play on pure servers, the hud file can be anywhere, it just so happens that the default one is in a pk3, you can change 1 cvar (which isn't cheat protected for a reason i would assume), and you can use any hudfile, in or out of pk3's.

Of course, you might not realize that fs_homepath is preferred over fs_basepath. Now that I've told you, you know. But if you insist I'm wrong, good. It means you aren't as likely to try making your own cheats.

Except then servers with sv_pure=1 wouldn't allow you to join, right? (Assuming that we're talking about the current crosshairless aliens  1.1.0 version of trem)
