Application as Soundtrack guy +New Tune
« on: November 29, 2006, 01:11:16 pm »
Hey there creators and players!

Since first playing Tremulous, I have become a fan of the project. I'm an electronic musician and created some music influenced by the game. If you want to check it out:

http://www.skore.de/images/stories/music/Song_122_07.ogg
http://www.skore.de/images/stories/music/Song_122_07.mp3

Or go here to stream the song.

If you like it, I could elaborate on this theme and create a couple of songs that can be used for the game and its (custom) maps.

All the music I make is released under a creative commons license, so feel free to share!

Hope you like it :)

I like it too it gave me an idea of a trailer for the game:Marines chatting in a bunker then swarm of lower class aliens then gunfight, camera goes in to show the landscape of the wartorn battlefield ending with a a marine with just a blaster blasting aliens and then a tyrant see,s him and the tyrant is rushing to him and the camera zooms in on the marine while he blasts teh tyrant to no avail then blackout,Tremulous:Join the fight, the words appears tariler finishes.

I must say i didn t like it much...its a nice song, but it doesnt suit Trem.
i thought it was a bit too flat and joyful for a fast-paced FPS in a dark atmosphere.
For me a music for Tremulous should be either :
- a worrying music (think "horror movies") in order to create a dark atmosphere (think "Marine alone in a wide dark room where dretches can hide everywhere")
- or a fast-paced music you would enjoy to hear in a middle of a fight to get you pumped up (think "Hard/Metal Rock" or fast-paced Techno)
But thats just my 2 cents.

Anyway i hope no mapper will ever put a music file in his map because one important thing while playing Trem is to listen to the ambient sounds. You can detect when an ennemy is in your back, when the guy in front of you is badly wounded, etc...

Usually when i m playing a game, i listen to my own music...However, when i m playing Trem, i always shut it down, and only listen to the sounds of the game. So i wouldn t want to be oblige to listen to a music when i dont want to.

Well, I was thinking this up purely for the startup screen and thought that I could do a couple of ambient remixes of the theme for usage in maps. I guess the general question whether to have music in a map or not is just as old as FPS themselves and agree that you should be able to switch them off. I do think that it can add to the athmosphere for some players - but of course you can never please a player who always listens to his own music ;)

As for the general comment - I am surprised that its regarded as joyful ;) I know that I tend to create harmonic music and especially towards the end it lightens up a bit, but in general I was trying to create something fat and concerned. But I guess everybody sees his game differently - I found Trem to be a good and at times a little claustrophobic shooter, but still by far not a horror game...

Thanks for the opinion, will see whether I can make a dark and worrying remix ;)

It misses some punch to it, it needs something that makes it sound more dark and scarier...  :) .

Well... metal has been the sound of tremulous since tremradio ;)

What kind of music would marines listen to in their spare time? Aliens would listen to happy hardcore while they get high from eating human adrenal glands and jump around taunting for no apparent reason (as they do in almost every game).

I like sk0re's piece but I'm don't think it fits in with trem - I agree that dark, tense, "impending doom" music (like that of the opening sequence to alien3). Ultimately, trem need intro music that is so scary that by the time the first map has loaded, everyone is so overwhelmed with fear and terror that even the most pr0 players crap their pants and faint at the first sight of a dretch. Yes, that's right, the intro music should be "wannabe" by the Spice Girls.

Maybe I'm just uncreative, but I was thinking better opening music would be like (not the same as, but similar to) the opening music for the Doom 3 LMS mod - http://www.neurosphere.it/Images/media/LMS.mp3

except, not as upbeat. and no horns

hmmmmmm... the song's good I guess...
but I expected some more... horror songs, I mean, Tremulous is scary, especially when a tyrant is charging at you and  you don't have any weapons :P (My brother always screams when that happens)
Anyways, the song was good, I didn't get tired of it. But it sounded more like... ghost busters...
oh well, still good :P

But Tremulous isn't a horror game. It's more of an adrenaline game, whatever that means. It's not turn around and scream at what's there, it's more turn around and empty your shotgun into the goon.

Not really for trem, but it's something :D
Thanks for taking the effort of doing an actual song.

{Note to Dasprid: play this one in the next tremradio :)}

Let me clarify my point : i said "horror movie" because i dont know how to describe songs in English. With the terms "horror movie", everyone got my point and know approximately what kind of music i m waiting for.

Tremulous isn t an horror game, but it is inspired by Gloom...If you dont know Gloom, its a Quake 2 mod which is dark, dark, and...DARK.
However, like Lava_Croft once said, Quake 3 engine makes things "cute". The proportion in models (Battlesuit for example), the lightnings etc... everything looks a bit different than it should be. You can guess that the game is using Quake 3 engine just by looking at it. So this removes a bit of what could have been scary.
But i do think the game is (or at least is intented to be) scary: When a tyrant charges, it is scary (that s why every noob shout "OMG TYRANT" whenever they see one). When you ve got a rifle and no armor, going in a boxes room with many shadows and place to hide for aliens, it is scary.

Thats why i think a scary music would suit Trem.

Hmm, I actually never knew I had such an entry on last.fm and thought you just created it... so thanks for pointing me to it!

As for the other comments, I think I can already draw one conclusion - you seem to be OK with the idea of having some new music to Trem and while some already like the song as it is, most would like to have it darker.

I guess I will go back to the drawing board and put out at least a scary remix of the song. Thanks for all the response so far!

Just to get this right, is this the mood the "darker and more scary"-people are looking for:

http://www.skore.de/images/stories/music/Song_129.ogg
http://www.skore.de/images/stories/music/Song_129.mp3

Please excuse the bad quality, this was put together quite fast (say, an hour). I just wanted to test if I could get some dark feeling into a tune and sketched around a little.

Wow this one is really nice. Both "scary" and "punchy". Definitely a song for Trem. I cant believe you did this in only one hour.

The only thing that i thought a bit weird is that the slow/dark part is at the end of the song, after the fast/punchy part. I think it "might" be better the other way around...but i m not sure.

One thing is for sure : while writing this post, i have been listening to your song. It must be the 4th or 5th times but i dont wanna stop it XD.

Keep this style : in my opinion its perfect. I cant wait for a release with a better sound quality and/or a third song :p
