Some rules that everyone should know
« on: March 30, 2007, 07:02:38 pm »
Here are some things not mentioned.  You can be kicked for violating these rules.
May I suggest that this be made into a sticky?

1.  No base camping
--Means, no staying at base and just defending it the whole game.
2.  No luci spamming
--Means, no using the right click over and over again with the lucifer cannon.
3.  No feeding
--Means, if you're not good at the game, don't go out to fight alone, giving the other team free kills.
4.  No hacks
--Means, if you modify your source code (i.e. giving aliens crosshairs) don't go onto servers that aren't yours.
5.  No flaming
--Means, don't get overly mad at someone and try to insult them during the game.
6.  No cheap tricks
--I hope I don't need to explain this one.
7.  No deconning
--Don't destroy your own buildings without common consent, or unless you are the designated builder.

P.S.  I know, everyone already knows these rules, but noobs need to know them.

No. No it should not be made into a sticky.

1) Base camping to s2 is generally the only way humans can win.
2) Good point but not all (if not most) servers care, if they don't say at the splash screen 'No luci spamming' you should be safe (even though your still a kill whoring prick).
3) 90% of feeding is unintentional and if admins are kicking people just because they are new to the game I doubt that they have the reasoning skills to run a balanced server.
4) You do not have to modify the source code to use a custum HUD, the file is kept seperate from the pure checks for a reason.
5) Good point, but common sense. Anyways most people who flame get killed while talking, so a moot point.
6) It's called outsmarting the enemy, not "cheap tricks". You should use them, with the exception of glitch building (unless the admins don't care about that).
7) Great point, but really make it just don't build until you have played the game for awhile.

Anyways there are already two threads 'Introductory guide' and 'tremulous FAQ' that answer every one of these questons.

well these rules only apply if they're server rules. especially the spamming rule.  there's a lot of different definitions of spamming depending on the admins and the server you're on.

and no cheap tricks? is that like when I plop a nade, stand on it, then get a goon to to try and swipe me and get a suicide kill? but, i LOVE doing that.

May I strongly suggest you take those rules and stick them where the sun does not shine?
Who are you that you think you can make the rules on servers that do not belong to you?

Noobs need to know that not the players make the rules, rather the owners of the server.

So take your shit and shove it.

Oh and btw... Alien crosshair is no hack, it is a modification of the hud, which incidently is left out of the very basic cheat-protection of tremulous. So that the hud CAN be modified.

Another thing, you Dumbrazz, what about those server that have no designate patch?
Next time you get the urge and try to put up rules, just forget about posting them.

worst rule ever.

2.  No luci spamming

i stand corrected, that is the worst rule ever.
Quote

3.  No feeding
--Means, if you're not good at the game, don't go out to fight alone, giving the other team free kills.

while good sense, this isn't a rule on any servers i play on, and shouldn't be.

4.  No hacks
--Means, if you modify your source code (i.e. giving aliens crosshairs) don't go onto servers that aren't yours.

you don't have to modify any code to add alien crosshairs, and at least 4 of the devs have said xhairs are not cheating, but according to your rule, all admins should be kicked for modifying their client to have support for cl_guid.

5.  No flaming
--Means, don't get overly mad at someone and try to insult them during the game.
this is the first rule that makes any sense at all

6.  No cheap tricks
--I hope I don't need to explain this one.
you mean like hopping on the reactor when the base is undefended? stupid rule

I think some of those might be good suggestions. Here's what I suggest for a rule.

Large aliens: keep to the right in hallways, so your teammates can escape and heal

What the hell? Have you heard of the food chain? Bigger aliens don't need to give way to any half-arsed little dretch because they are by virtue of being bigger higher up in the food chain.

TK/TB my mara with your goon/tyrant pounce/charge and I will proceed to own your fat ass. You needn't take up the whole goddamn hall and killwhore every rifler that comes to hurt you and leave no space for escaping teammates, teammates who are actually helping the team by attacking and then needing to escape. If you're just loitering in the hall you will get thouroghly owned by me and anyone else who wants to get through.

Not sure if I've said this before, but I know I sure as hell wanted to.

You do realize that not everybody has absolutely no life and spends all their time either playing Trem or on the Trem forums?

You keep trying to bring up post count as a valid argument to call somebody a newbie to the game, or just an idiot in general.

I know a large amount of very skilled players who are hardly ever on the forums, if at all.  Does their low post count signify that they know nothing about the game?

If I recall correctly, you only started playing several months ago.  Maybe you're the one who needs to keep quiet?

Oh, wait...my advice doesn't matter, because you have a higher post count than me.

EDIT: Ray, I lol'd.

EDIT2:  To stay on topic, the threadstarter's rules are 5% common sense, 45% mentioned elsewhere, and 50% idiocy.  And that's being generous.

Your percentages may vary.  Dial 1-800-CLOSE-THISTHREAD for more information.  Side effects may include brain hemorrhages, amnesia, stigmata and death.

Maybe four smileys aren't enuff to indiate sarcasm. Let me explain them to you.

 This means the poster thinks they're imparting some knowledge to you, or sharing a secret joke, or just generally trying to be funny.

 This means the poster is embarrassed, either for himself, or possibly for you.

:-? The wry half-smile, meaning the poster is chagrinned, or saying, "wtf?".

:) The non-toothy smile, one step down from the shite-eatin' grin, meaning the poster sends warm feelings of happiness and amusement.

I didn't flame dude. I didn't say he was a newb to the game. I only meant that he hadn't enough experience of the forum to prepare himself for the actual flame attack which ensues around here when anyone tries to post "The Rules". Or didn't you see Smokey's attempt to let people know how to kowtow properly?

Just for you buddy:

9) Never assume someone is new just because they have a low post count. They might have a life, or just be an extra sock puppet.

Next time, I'll be more "generous", like you were. By the way, personal kvetching can be arranged via PM. You don't have to bother everybody else with that.  :P    :D

Nice troll, though. Flamey.

I've seen you do the same thing before several times, sans smileys.  Stop trying to cover up for idiocy.

As for Smokey, it's more because his rules revolve around him being a hypocritical, egotistical elitist than because he made rules in general.

I find it funny that both of you give suggestions and/or rules and yet you both fail to follow them completely.  You could've PMed me this, you know.

EDIT:  And when I need a smiley-face synopsis, I'll make sure to PM you.

Meh, I think people are being a little hard on the guy... when I read it, maybe I missed something, but I didn't get that he was trying to tell other servers what their rules should be, I thought he was just trying to help newbies understand some things.

After reading the replies and rereading the post, I can kind of see where people's flames are coming from, though. However, look at it this way: many of the "rules" that vary between servers (no luci spam, no camping, etc.) are still good for newbies to knows, as no matter what the actual server rules are, people will complain if you camp, luci spam, etc.

Bottom line: breaking these "rules" will still annoy many people, even if the server admins won't punish you.

Inane, utterly nonsensical flames and trolling completely unrelated to your post.

Statement as to my superiority over you.

Further derailment of the topic at hand.

// No, srsly.  I agree with Mad Joe partially - there was some decent advice there, but everything there is either madly debatable, pointless, or mentioned elsewhere, hence no need for a new thread.

1.  No base camping

Part of the game (leet aliens vs average humies trying to win or vise versa) (check point #3)
Quote

2.  No luci spamming

Lol, why in hell we have luci in the first place. Because we need to have guns also in games which we cannot use as they were meant? But 5min spam from the guy camping on reactor... well... thats different.
Quote

3.  No feeding

Zooomg, opposing team members are more skilled naab! Don't die nor try to kill them! Camp!!!!
Quote

4.  No hacks

Hacks are for perfectionists who wants to kill the game. Not supported in games where opponents are persons.
Quote

5.  No flaming

Well, the way you use your words should be always more effective than immature words.
Quote

6.  No cheap tricks

The trics to beat your enemy is rather the pearl in the game.
Quote

7.  No deconning

Agreed, but try to notice for example guys saws old base and there is lots of deconning text and notice that he just fastens new base building or guy deconning turret all the time when needed poits for example for armory (Got kicked from that reason as deconner because we needed armory)

Well.. First basic rules then advanced trics...

We have about 100 threads like this here and the fact that many of these rules should be in common sence.
Also few of the "rules" you mentioned are completely idiotic.
1. No base camping
If you like to sit in your base go ahead. Can't wait for you to get bored alone there xD
2. No luci spamming
I don't see problem... lucy is so slow that it's easyly avoided and the small ammo can only kill dreches that don't know anything about wall walk
3.No cheap tricks
Like what? If you get fooled it's your own problem to be fooled.

It was the weekend, player1, and I have a life.  I don't spend my weekends on trem forums.

I don't know a single l33t player who doesn't follow every one of my posted rules.  If you don't like them, then u/y.

Only losers base camp, luci spam, etc.  If you don't know that, you don't play trem very often.

And watch it!  Just because you are incapable of doing anything but base camping, doesn't make it okay.

Welcome back!

I have to admit, I thought you were cooler when you remained aloof.

   :P  :D

And yes, you summarized the major complaints fairly succinctly. It may not be a sticky, but your original post might make a cool T-shirt (sans explanations).    :)  :D

For better flaming, try the examples suggested above.

I have a life, you are a loser, if you don't agree you suck etc. are all lame not flame. I'm glad you tried to contribute something. I felt bad when everybody flamed you, mostly, 'cuz I can relate. I only have a couple hundred posts myself. I was joking, anyway. Please don't get caught up in Vindication?'s hate-fest. Your original post was offered in the spirit of community. If you want to take all the flaming in this thread out on me, go right ahead. wtf/e, my man. Have a lovely Trem-day.

You violated #5. Also, #'s 1 & 3 should be sequential (no camping/feeding), and the explanation after feeding although fairly complete, (since it says don't go out alone) could use an additional statement about 1 & 3 seeming contradictory. (I'm suggesting you make #3 into #2, and have luci spamming - or just spamming in general - be number 3). Also, I'm not saying your idea was a sucky one. It's good for people who've never played any team-based shooters before, and a useful message page for your server. Please be aware also, that the Linux-using freeware standalone player one finds in Tremulous may have a certain innate resistance to being told "The Rules". Even the unwritten ones which "every l33t player agrees on".
