People fucking with my armory walls vex me greatly.
Of course, the use of them is controversial to say the least.
But I love making ATCS bases which are not cramped in that damn corner, but still blocks alien view into the base. (of course, the reac/vital buildings part has sufficient protection to withstand some jumpers, not to mention that it is hard to jump.
I manage to somewhat extend the humans dominion over the room and make movement for aliens when attacking harder, as well as less team bleeding/blocking in and around the base better.
It's not really better for defending, but it is a lot less claustrophobical and cramped, and is somewhat better for actually pushing away the weaker alien attacks, instead of just scaring them from attacking with an intimidating wall of turrets, instead of just having them wait around the corner for easy food.
And one more thing: Adv. dragoons do not seem to be interested in sniping or destroying their (in their vision) useless armoury wall bloking their line of fire to the reactor, they instead focus fire on the non-vital turrets designed for keeping aliens further away from the base. (i usually make several "stages" of defense that the aliens needs to go through, giving me more time to rebuild turrets inside in case of hard rushes, i still try to make all the 'barricades' in line of fire to major alien attack routes, though, like the lower walkway leading up to the human base in ATCS.
So far, it has been working rather good. The base is easy to keep defended even though you loose turrets due to the closed nature of the base, bottlenecks are fine for killing off bigger aliens, or in the very least, scaring them away.
Also, the more 'calm' and screened off reactor 'room' (i keep it walled off with one, line of sight- blocking armoury.) makes it easier for the humans currently reloading/ healing up to notice the reactor jumping maras that occasionaly occur.
I always stay around to adapt/nurture/repair my base, since there is no 'ultimate base'. For emergencies, i wall into the corner, like mainstream atcs bases, but only when i have no choice.
