Cargoport-102 - Your Face MapComp Judges' reviews

Mapname: Cargoport-102
Author: your face

Story: CargoPort-102 was one of the key positions in overcoming the alien horde.  The humans relied heavily upon it for their weapons, equipment, and most of their much-needed supplies.  It was also used as a NASA Rocket-testing site, which the humans used to test their new weapons for annihilating the overwhelming alien threat.  Being located in Antarctica, it was thought to be impossible for aliens to find it's hidden location.
However, one mundain day, a shipment of unidentified supplies, from an unknown shipper, was mysteriously discovered in one of the waste facility-transfer rooms.  AppleFace, unfortunately, was the first to find it. Knowing that no shipments were stored here, he foolishly ripped it open to dump it in a nearby trash compactor.
He was never seen again...
CargoPort-102 was required to immediately evacuate all personnel, but due to the recent blizzards, they were trapped in, and all reinforcements were trapped out.  The poorly trained workers were into grabbing any weapon they could find...

{0.15}(7) Skill in building, judged from .map.
The map itself looks a lot better than his usual work. He has some problems with understanding the correct usage of hint but I’m not going to hold that against him. There’s a slight error in the vent leading to the alien base which might need a rebuild in the .map. There are some intersecting brushes but nothing really noticeable.
{0.25}(8)Bugs, inconsistencies, judged from playing and inspecting the map.
Few bugs and inconsistencies, considering the usual output from your face I’m not making a big deal out of it. Those that do occur could be fixed.
{0.3}(7) Gameplay, judged from playing.
It’s a hard job to judge it all out in such a short period of time but it is a complicated map in gameflow. It is not that big and slightly busy at certain locations but nothing really bad can occur except in the really large areas. There are enough hiding spaces and paths to keep it interesting for a long time although its size does promote egghunts and I don't know if we want it to last that long.
{0.3}(6,5) Creativity, judged from looks.
It seems as if he started out with a good direction but drifted a bit off in the end which resulted in an undirected part of the map. The rockets are nice enough in the map and other imaginative situations are also built. If he would tone down the joke pictures a bit and up the direction for his next map he surely has the fantasy to create wonderful maps in the future.

w00t!  but darn rockets....lol

also i thought that the "joke pictures" would make it more entertaining, tho... and (mebe) i would get some "creativity" reward  ;D lol

oh, and (duh) here's the link for download.

oh, btw, was it waay laggy for anyone?  cuz im not sure if teh optimizing worked... but i am sure that the hint helped quite a bit.

Your hinting was off. Don't hold it against you since to really understand hinting you need to understand vis. And to really understand vis you have to map and play for a while. Can't say anything about optimizing, my new system doesn't lend itself well to stresstest since it just runs over things.

{0.15}[6] The building skills showcased, as judged from the .map source.
It seems his skills are slowly improving, although I do not understand why he is using hint brushes, since they do not really seem to be placed correctly. Reading a simple tutorial on hinting could have alleviated this.  Overall it leaves the impression of a map made by someone with basic knowledge of mapping, but great -read 'big'- ideas for the execution. Once his skills improve sygnificantly, I think we might get some nice maps from him.
{0.25}[6]Bugs and other weirdness as found by playing and a little searching.
Upon entering the map I was greeted by a whopping 60.000 triangles, while frantically searching where all those triangles were being spent. This is unacceptable. A small clipping brush at the bottom of the stairs leading out of the water could have solved the annoying case of having to completely surface before being able to leave the water. Other than this, no real show-stoppers were found.
{0.3}[7] Gameplay, as judged from playing for a very short period with very little players.
The layout certainly is different from the usual stuff presented to me, although I cannot really judge if it will actually work, thanks to a lack of playing time on the map. There are tons of hiding spots, which should make this map pretty fun for the smaller Aliens. Some of the hallways seem a bit cramped with crates, barrels and the like, which could make navigating them with the fat Aliens a bit tedious, but nowhere near impossible. Due to the size and layout of the map, I expect a lot of egghunting going on, something that is fun for a short while, but very quickly gets tiresome.
{0.3}[8] Creativity, as judged from the overall impression of the map
This is the best part of the map, Yourface really went out of his way -within the limits of his mapping skills- to make this map quite fun to walk around. There are just too many things to mention here, but weapon crates, funny posters, smoke-emitting missiles and other stuff leave the impression of a brain full of ideas, begging for more mapping skills. A bit less uniform texturing and blocky rooms certainly would have helped, but I think Yourface knows that himself too. Also, the difference between the quality of the some parts of the map is quite astounding, as some rooms actually look quite good, while others are underwhelming to say the least. A bit more consistency would be appreciated, but I guess the time restraint is to blame for this.

I think that it is amazing that Lava said good things about one of Face's maps!

Haven't had a look at it yet, but I can be pretty sure that it will be good!

Yes, but currently we are all as bad as him if we do the same thing.  I do not see a problem with necro'ing myself, but where's Lava when we need him? :P

The real reasoning is that this map is so old and horrible I don't want anyone to see it anymoar.
