Notice to Donators
« on: August 30, 2008, 05:13:33 am »
Howdy,

As many of you have noticed I've added badges to the post profiles so that people can see who is a Moderator, Developer, and of course Donaters!

Unfortunately the records surrounding who have donated are a little bit hodge-podge. I have emailed all the users who donated via sourceforge, but only got one reply so far.

If you have donated in the past, please PM me or post here so I can give you your due recognition. If you have some proof or something, would make my life much easier :-> .

To all you lamers who haven't donated yet - now is the perfect time!

Thanks for your ongoing support!

I'll applaud the first contributor turned developer, who is doing a moderator job and who completes his set by donating some money.
I’m busy. I’ll ignore you later.

I was going to nominate Lakitu7 for a contributor badge, but I just noticed that was edited out :(

I would donate, but I don't really trust putting my credit card number on the internet, to something like paypal or etc. If I could give you the money in real life, I would. :P

Decent maps will earn you recognition without a badge. A mapper badge is likely to result in little more than persistent arguments and flamewars between n00bs complaining that "omg he got a mapper badge for map-xyz why I don't get one? my map is way bettar!".

This is 100% true and is also the reason I removed the contributor badge (though I still want to find a way to recognize those hardened veterans who have given their time and hardwork getting their code into svn) for now.

Explain to me, what does donating do exactly? I mean, if you donate to a server - the money will be used to pay the server bills, but what does donating to the Trem dev do? Are they going to use this money to better improve trem?

The money goes to Timbo directly and in his own words:
Quote
Tremulous has taken many years and a great deal of effort to develop, with no financial backing whatsoever. Monetary gain has never been our goal, but it would be churlish of us to turn down donations from willing individuals. If you've had fun playing Tremulous or if you just respect what we've accomplished, please consider donating. Thanks.

Obviously The devs and Timbo have put ALOT of time/money/energy into making this game and all the related parts to it. If donating $10 means Timbo can buy an extra case of energy drinks for that late-night coding session, I think it's in everybody's best interest to pony up the dough. Also think about how much money Timbo could've made if he went full commercial with this awesome game - it's obviously good enough to have made him some money, but instead the devs chose to make this game free for everyone and in face have spent a lot more than a few dollars towards that goal.

I've spent $100's of dollars on trem allready and do so every month because I think trem is worth it, do you?

As far as I knew trem was barely in development anymore, its mostly just modded servers using mods or different QVM's.

Sure 1.2 or 1.1.1 is being tested on MG dev server, but no one is ever on there to test it and last update was back when?

Quote
Timbo, Friday 31st of March 2006 20:00:01 GMT - Standalone version released

2 years later 1.2 is finally being 'tested'. I'm not saying that donating is bad or anything, yes its a good game, love that you guys made it and all, but wheres it going? Barely any progress in the game in over 2 years.

I'd love to see future versions of this out, such as a single player could be very interesting where people can start modding that and make their own campaigns for the humans/aliens.

I'm not a coder, don't know anything about it except that it was too hard for me to learn. I do know that this game could have been a lot more updated in the past 2 years.

Show me progress and I'd be more then happy to donate a couple hundred dollars to the game.

EDIT:
Sorry I dont want to donate $10 to 4-6 energy drinks

Tremulous is under very steady active development, ample proof is everywhere you look!

The SVN log shows hundreds of commits as recent as YESTERDAY

Bugzilla clearly shows lots of progress

And as you pointed out, Norfenstein's (he's a dev btw) balance changes are being actively tested on the MGDEV server, and there are planned games there every saturday where you can come help! Mgdev is very regularly updated and commits are made all the time.

Not to mention my own threads regarding non-code changes to trem.

If all those things don't clearly show progress, I don't know what does.

Donating helps all these things and more. There are probably a thousand other reasons I could give to donate, but really if you need that much convincing, maybe you just don't love trem enough :-p

Barely any progress in the game in over 2 years.

Didn't score any points for observation there. Among the development news on these forums, SVN and bugzilla, there has been a development blog for some time now.

I know about the MG dev servers, I was on yesterday, never saw anyone on the servers...

And Im not talking about progress in the development or SVN logs, Im talking about public releases of newer versions with new content for players to enjoy. Something that hasnt happened for over 2 years...

And as a good friend said to me on msn just now, you must be very rich Khalsa to be putting soo much money into trem...

I looked at the SVN logs, all of them, progress on trem didnt pick back up until november of last year, thats still a whole year and 4 or so months of nothing happening after the stand alone release.

The dev's may have been working on trem all this time, but you seriously havn't shown it. I almost half tempted to teach myself C/C++ and buy the programs needed to edit the source code and implement my own ideas.

Heres something sad even, a guy on some forums that made the wall hack program for trem even gave up on making new hacks for trem because no new versions were in development for him to hack.

Which also reminds me, you guys should make a update that blocks hacking somehow, or at least a way for admins on a server to see if someone is using those programs. Such as a clienttest and if the person is using the wall hack client they get banned.

Ideas
feel free to look at the feedback area for some of those suggestions and ideas people keep throwing out there for dev's to work with. Such as this.

If you're going to get into name calling, I'll be happy to split your crap off of this thread and throw it away.  But since your comment was that you're tempted to teach yourself C/C++ and buy the programs needed to edit the source code, DoI's reply is perfectly accurate.

So you've never seen anyone on the MG Dev servers.  When were you on?  How long did you stay there waiting for others?  How often do you yourself join servers that may be listed as empty, or do you just bypass them 'cause nobody's there so there must be nothing going on ever?  I'm sure one of the people who run the server could probably come back with logs of how many players have been on over various times recently - hell I could too if I had a sufficient amount of unlazy - but you seem to be interested in contradicting people.

Since this is now running quickly away from the original topic of those people who have supported Tremulous with their wallet and towards those who will drive away any desire in furthering its development with their mouths, I suggest we get back to the original discussion.

I have more of a problem with the people who think donating is only worthwhile for things in the present and future. You've already spent tons of time with this game. Is it worthless? Were the years that it took Timbo and co. to make this not worth buying him a beer or what have you in thanks? Yes, development continues and by donating you support that, but the notion that people shouldn't donate were that not the case is rather ridiculous. If you don't want to donate for any of various reasons, whatever, but don't whine that you will not because the free product you've been given generously doesn't meet your expectations.

i donate new code and features instead to the community(better than nothing :P)

about the svn logs take out the ioQuake 3 merges and not alot has been done the only progress i see is the community submitted stuff and mg's work on balance/game changes. honestly there is not much being done on the main client but at least its still progressing and the community's starting to pick up the slack fixing all the bugs / adding new things. at this rate 1.2 will be released in 10 or so years though (well maybe my estimate a little bit big)

i wouldn't donate because simply i don't have the money.

Funny.  I remember being told how the developers don't owe the players anything (updates) due them doing this all for free.  If I donate something because 'past experiences', I invalid that idea .

Anyways, I'd be glad to donate when 1.2 comes out.  I'd be glad to donate now if the developers weren't treating this as a closed project, intellectually.  Any time a suggestion comes along, the answer is always 'code it yourself and see who plays it.'  Player feedback is listened to but not considered.  So I say 'code it and see if I donate'.

I never meant for it to go from the topic subject, I only stated why I havn't and why I wont be donating any time soon.
