What Trem Needs To Stay Alive
« on: October 29, 2008, 01:11:04 am »
Lately, I've noticed (and I'm sure I'm not the only one. . .) that tremulous is feeling rather. . .dead. The majority of trem players that I started playing with (just over a year ago)have all left to either play other games, or just quit online gaming all together. If tremulous is going to stay around at all, it needs a major revamping, considering there are now games like Combat Arms, Battlefield Heroes, and soon Counterstrike Online to compete with. While tremulous has pretty solid game play, its graphics suck horribly and and the fact that no large size map can be played without lag problems are major problems that significantly affect people's first impressions of the game. That aside, other problems are in the slow development (Combat Arms making updates every week as compared to every 2 years here. . .), and the (I know everyone says this) game engine. I don't want this to sound like I'm just putting down tremulous, it's just that I don't want to see it die, after having been dedicated to it for over a year. My point is, if there ever was a time to make some radical changes to tremulous it would be now.

But none of these games have Grangers!

If you have problems because your client is lagging, you may try the (experimental) SSE patches from here. I'd be very interested in any feedback if this works/helps.

18 & 18c.
I'm not saying my ideas are what would save trem, I'm just saying we should either start forming some ads and revitalizing it, or make some major adjustments, and what I really hate most about that topic is that while they may be common things, you guys should actually listen to them.

On the other hand, on the void forums, they brought up the point that it's really American trem that's started to go downhill. . . .

This is no problem of mine personally, it's when you try to call a vote for one of the better built maps, like transit, the first response is "F2! I lag!", but this also brings up another point, how you have to manually install anything to get a tolerable version of the game, I've got almost 300Mb of added stuff in my base folder.

Trem is a triumph.
I'm making a note here: huge success.
It's hard to overstate my satisfaction.

Turret camping
We do what we must because we can.
For the good of all of us
Except the ones who are dead.

But there's no sense crying over every mistake
You just keep on spamming till you run out of creds
And the camping gets done and you buy a shotgun
For the dretches who are still alive

I'm not even trying.
I'm being so easy right now.
Even though you sniped my reactor and killed me.
And tore me to pieces.
And ate every piece.
And as they digested it hurt because
I was about to nade you.

Now these points of respawning make a beutiful game
And you're out of evos we're rebuilding on time.
So I'm glad I got eaten think of all the credits I earned
For the dretches who are still alive

Go ahead an leave me.
I think I prefer to stay in base.
Mabye you'll find another game to entertain you.
Maybe 1.2
That was a joke. Haha. Fat chance.
Anyway this game is great:
It's got grangers and nades.

Look at me still talking when there's spamming to do.
When I look out there it makes me glad I'm not you.
I've turrets to build there are grenades to be dropped
On the dretches who are still alive

Believe me Trem is still alive
They're making updates and Trem's still alive
Trem is fantastic and it's still alive
while your dying Trem'll be still alive
and when your dead it will be still alive
still alive
still alive.

I have had no problems with lag on any map. The lowest Ive seen my fps reach is 20. so It may be you and a few others.

Hey, I definitely don't want to see it go, it's just that I've realized that I've been stuck in a trem ghetto now for a year and a lots changed outside of that, and trem needs a bit more than the oversize mod 1.2 is looking like

Hey stick, I know what you need to stay alive:

Less crack.
And as for that. . .maybe we should save this for another thread  ;)

hmm... maybe [alexa.com]
Or    maybe not [tremulous.net] . There was a peak but its still not as bad as you think (http://tremulous.net/graphs/).
However, I agree on one aspect: the quality of game-play has gone down - the player temperament, on average, has deteriorated ... with little patience and more subordination new players are getting intimidated. We do need more influx :(  .

Thats funny, coming from you.

Lol, jk.

Anyways, good ol' Tremulous is still breathing and giving us the best FPS experience on the internet right now, but will it keep living up to hold us for maybe 2-4 years?

Don't worry guys, I have a feeling v1.2 will come out soon enough, the )MG( Server has good balance changes (I still hate that turret-spin delay anyway) and the v1.2 videos on YouTube looks nice, cross our fingers, lets not hope this will end up like another awesome game like Purge.

That is only one thing, what scared me in new version. Tremulous is already balanced, not need any changes in that way. And good balancing is most important thing and most hardest thing to make it right. I don't know why is changed something what is already ok. Result can be only same, or worst.

You mean I should play Trem only for a couple of hours once a week on Saturdays ?  :D

The graphics in Combat Arms is similar to Trem, people like cause of customisation. The original CS's graphics are also similar to trem, however if you mean CS:S, fair enough. Battlefield Hero's though free to play, limits the player until they choose to play. Trem offers it's own unique style of gameplay.

I'm not debating that trem has good gameplay, I think it's great, though we need more diversity in gamemodes/ maps, and a gfx upgrade, so it's really not that big of an overhaul if you think about it.

1.1 isn't balanced.
Look at the graphs, aliens win 75% of the time.
Any maps not in the MG repo?  Email me or come to irc.freenode.net/#mg.

Yes. The balance stats Timbo collects are certainly not completely useless and tainted by all the servers that use rather exotic settings and mods.

Where?
This looks good: http://www.capponcino.it/tremulous/statsprolinux/mapindex.html

Also is need to say with how many players it is not balanced. Because balancing is different with 1 VS 1, 5 VS 5 or 64 VS 64.

The amount of players isn't the only factor. Whether or not the game is public or a clan match affects the way the game is played significantly. As does the distribution of experience.

Think of it this way: If 500 games are won by aliens and 500 won by humans you might think the game is nicely balanced. Then you find out that of the human wins 50 were clan matches and that the aliens didn't win a clan match once.

Yes, there are more public games, but your long term players tend to be the ones fighting the clan matches. Not that clan matches are completely balanced at the moment (it seems like the slightest bit of teamplay gives the humans the advantage). So any support for us clan gamers would be appreciated!
