Gloom, the Tremulous developer's inspiration that shattered the RTS/FPS genre into high gear. It may look crappy, but its all gold on the inside as its impressively balanced and addictive gameplay dragged players from all over to play it back in the day. Unfortunately, it has been forgotten and remained a treasure in all our hearts for 6 years. Today, (Nov.20th 2008 CANADA) a new developer arises to take over the mod after 6 years of the mod being mostly in-active.
Whats new now? He added a new trailer, screen shots and a stand-alone game that you can play Gloom,
FOR FREE.
What the hell are you doing reading this thread? I suggest that you run like a dretch to the bottom link for the page where I got this news from.
http://www.moddb.com/mods/gloom/news/gloom-is-still-herehttp://files.filefront.com/gloom13standalone1exe/;12401909;/fileinfo.html<-- Stand-Alone version of Gloom. Basically its just the Quake 2 demo (which is needed in order to run gloom) and the Gloom mod packed together. Features an .exe installer and a nifty server browser to see all the available servers.
http://www.fileplanet.com/hosteddl.aspx?gmd%2fGloom.All.Map.Pack.2004-12-19.PAKs.7z<-- Gloom Map Pack on FilePlanet, practically every custom/default map was collected in 2004 and zipped into an archive. You can practically play almost all servers without needing to waste time and download a map every round. Its give or take 600mb in size, and you stick it in your
C:\Program Files\Gloom\gloom folder. NOT in the maps folder, not anywhere else. Only in that folder.
Gloom FAQ:What is Gloom again?Gloom was the inspiration for Tremulous. It features an Alien Vs. Humans cobat and you can build structures to defend your base. To win, you'll have to defeat the other opponents base/spawns.
So its like Tremulous, right? You could say that, but then again, its not. I can't really explain how much differences there are between the two games, so you'll have to play it yourself to determine whats different.
The game doesn't start after I downloaded the stand-alone version and tried clicking on a server in the browser! It says something about my client being too old! D:It happens, to play on the current Gloom servers you'll have to use a different version for the Gloom/Quake client. Fortunately it came with Gloom, but it didn't configure itself for some reason. Open thw the server browser > Go to Config > and a window will pop up. Ignore all the shit you see in the window but the two text bars called "Game path" and "Game executable". In game path, erase everything and paste in
C:\Program Files\Gloom\. For the "Game Executable", erase everything and paste in
r1q2.exe. It should work now.
WTF Hendrich? Credit the damn developers and give us a link to their main site!http://www.planetgloom.com/<-- Official site, kinda out-dated now.
http://www.moddb.com/mods/gloom<-- Official(?) page for Gloom for ModDB.
All the credit for this wonderful game goes out to the developers, thank you!! ^^
So, what specs do I need to have to run it?If you can run Tremulous and Windows XP/Mac OS9/Lunix/etc, you can play this game.
Requirements:90 Mhz processor
216mb of Ram
Open-Gl/Glide supported required for full 3D pleasure. Software mode is also available if not (But it'll look like crap).
Wow, this game looks like crap, it looks even crappier then Tremulous! Its based on the original Quake 2 engine, so don't expect it to look so good. Besides, back then, this game looked great for a Quake 2 game.
This game sucks! You suck. How about you go play pussy games like NS until you have the respect and balls to play an awesome game like Gloom?
Does the game come with a manual?http://www.planetgloom.com/gloom_gameplay_information.html<-- This webpage should help you to learn the basics of Gloom.
What about a forum?http://forums.planetgloom.com/<-- Not much compared to this forum, but its still a strong community.
Screenshots/videos for Gloom?Ok, fine, here you go, you lazy butt.
Screenshots:
What a sexy alien...
Cool-looking human robot.
Frag time in Gloom, the usual.
Alien structures, similar to Tremulous, but different.
You don't want to mess with these guys....Videos:I felt lazy after typing all of this, so I posted only one video, enjoy nevertheless. Theres a bunch more on Youtube and theres the video on the Gloom ModDB page.

Well, thats that. Will this new developer add to Gloom and will Gloom rise again? Was this post useless and am I ever going to win as an alien in Gloom? Or most important of all, is the video at the bottom either a Rick'Roll or the actual developer talking about Gloom 2? All of this will be revealed, later on.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHg5SJYRHA0So, Trem developers, get your old Quake 2 CD's, Gloom fans, get the stand-alone version and newbies, learn how to play Gloom because I promise you Gloom might probaly take away most of your free time in the next few months.
