3dmark05 tests and Dec.19 Youtube/Google Blackout Boycott.
« on: December 15, 2008, 03:00:53 am »
Find a video.

I'll describe it in as much detail as possible and hope that someone recognizes it.

First off, it's cgi. It features an airship over a large body of water. The airship passes over a large skeleton, and then proceeds into a canyon. The airship is then attacked by a large sea serpent, and proceeds to fire it's cannons at the beast. The airship then leaves and heads towards a rather large cityscape. Also, if I remember correctly, it's one in a series of videos that people can render as a stress test for their computer. I remember a video featuring a forest, as well.

Thanks for any names, descriptions, or links.

Oh, One, thank you! It's embarrassing to say that I searched for, I kid you not, an hour straight and didn't find anything. Thanks again.

I couldn't find it at all under videos, or with really intensive search strings, so I just entered "airship+sea monster" into Google, and there it were. The description you gave made it really easy for me. As soon as I saw the word "test", I was pretty sure I'd found it (since I remembered back when you were checking out a variety of game engines).

Kind of reminds me of when I'm building scenery, and I'm standing right next to it, worrying over one little detail, and somebody else walks in and goes, "Hey, didja realize that thing ain't level?" The old other-dude perspective. At least you were brave enough to say "Fuck it. Somebody find this for me." If I still was running Windows, I might even have looked for a free download on that page (or if this thing had a real graphics card in it). :P

Cheers!

I did the exact same search, came up with the result and said to myself: this can't be it, there's no video, or even pictures...
Now I look in the sidebar and see images, but no video...?

But is it free?

Apparently the video is the test software, and as well as watching it, it gives you a performance benchmark. I didn't see "free" or "click meh", so I stayed away (plus I don't need a rendering tool to tell me this laptop has circa 1999 gfx ability).

Here's the rendered video, if any of you are interested: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pGoI5qJM2A8

Anyone taking part in the YouTube blackout boycott on the 19th?

I'll do it, just because I like to be a pain in the ass, but I doubt it'll be too effective.  The petition I saw had less than a 100 names on it, and that's definitely not going to be a big enough minority for Youtube to go back and re-tool it's new policy.

I did change my homepage to "msn.com" rather than my typical google, so hell, at least I can feel like a rebel.

Mmm. It's far too small scale to be something great, but I may rebel a little bit.

I'm not quite sure. I remember seeing the video a year ago, and it was a good demonstration of a concept that I had in my head for my friend.

Haha. Yes, you had better.

Basically the idea behind the boycott is that, since YouTube and Google are pay-per-click websites, if enough people black them out for a while, they'll be forced to listen to the users. People have a gripe with YouTube shutting down free speech after being bought by Google.

Check this out, it's in some other language but perfectly understandable. The one you want is obviously the one with the airship.

PS: Very cool video.

youtube is crap to start with, what's your problem? if you desperately want some movie or something, just torrent it. odds are you'll find something.

Torrenting is not only illegal (that's hasn't stopped any of us, though), it's dangerous. All it takes is one bad torrent to require a complete wipe of your hard drive.

Torrenting is not illegal. Torrenting copyrighted stuff on a global scale without prior permission is illegal. (At least that's what they try to sell to the public - also: respect your local law)

Torrenting certain files without certain permissions is illegal. Pirating is illegal, and pirates use torrents as a form of information sharing. By bad torrent, I was referring to one containing a virus. It's not all that hard to sneak one in, especially with all of the careless users.

Taken out of context, this quote is quite amusing.
