If you make it small then the people who use OSX will have itr pixelated, you always work at the highest size and then you make it small (adjustments if needed).

Heres an Human vs Alien 1.
that is sweet, but needs to have a brighter color

you more arty they become, the less they're like the trem HUD, and so less right for the game. Anyone follow me here? :-?

I don't think I agree. This is supposed to be an icon for tremulous, not an ingame thing and if it looks arty, that might make the game look more professional. The icon kinda represents the theme of the game rather than the game itself.

By the way, if anyone wants the svg, just ask!

I'd love to have the svg for that. I think that, without the "T", would be awesome.

Edit: You guys need to stop designing at 128x128. (I know this sounds hypocritical coming from me) These icons will probably turn out fine when you scale down the svg, but designing at a size that won't be used (except in certain cases on OSX) isn't the best idea. The Tango Icon Theme Guidelines really have a lot of smart ideas about this kind of stuff, coming straight from professional icon designers.

http://www.durand.zephyrhosting.net/dump/tremicons/trem_icon_ah.svg

I'm only designing in 128x128 because someone else started to design in that size and i guess i just wanted to keep the pattern. As it's SVG, it doesnt really matter anyway. On Linux and Mac, Im pretty sure the icons are usually SVGs and scalling won't be a problem. For those who use Windows, I've been checking that they look ok at the smaller sizes. Someone please remind me what the default icon size for windows is. 32x32 and 16x16, right?

Oh and I have been using the tango icons as a guide anyway, especially for the design techniques though I don't think tremulous and tango icons will go together well.

If anyone wants the icons in any other size, just say so.

I think durand's is a touch too busy and I don't like the T (a pure image logo I think would be nice) but it is pretty and nicely symbolic.
Try cutting the diameter of the outer blue ring so it has approximately the same area as the red on the left.

I was thinking of doing something similar to this one by a Turret.

Instead of doing that, I was thinking of making a cog a bit like this one but in 2D :

For the bicolor logo, make the T cutout.

Do you mean removing the T and having a cut through the rest of the icon? A boolean operation? Anyway, thats what I'm trying now with different fonts.

Theoretically, that's true, but I think I say this best when I just link to someone else's arguments on the subject.

From what I can tell, the default for Mac is .icns (which I've only seen on Macs, think .ico). For Linux, it really doesn't matter, although .svg and .png tend to be "standards."

Yeah, 32 for desktop/Explorer, 16 for menus.

True, they probably don't fit too well in general theme, although it would be interesting to try this out in a Tango style. I think I may try that.

I've updated the icon as i said i would though I don't like it. Here it is:
<a whole bunch of pictures>

I've taken the liberty of making a *real* .icns file out of this, as a nice drop-in for the Tremulous icon for Mac. Since I still like my Armoury a little more (although ah_reshaped is growing on me), I also made a real .icns for the Armoury.

Basically, .icns files include multiple images, designed at 16x18, 32x32, 48x48, and 128x128. Sort of like a compromise between vector and raster.

ah_reshaped.icns
armoury.icns

To use these as your icons (Mac users only), go to the folder where you have Tremulous installed. Right-click Tremulous, Show Package Contents. Navigate to Contents:Resources, copy/paste the icon you want, rename Icon.icns to something else, and name your favorite one to Icon.icns.

PS: durand, I think the icon would be a lot better if you either removed the T or the bolt. At the smaller sizes (but also at 128x128), they just clash and intersect too much to convey anything meaningful. The red and blue of the Trem HUD are really iconic as it is.

No, Macs use .icns files. The .icns is basically just a wrapper for multiple sizes (128, 48, 32, and 16). It also includes a 1-bit hit mask. Here's a screenshot of Icon Composer (part of Xcode, btw):

BTW, what everyone here is trying to say is that they want to T to be a boolean cutout.

Um, what platform are you on? I'm assuming Windows, where you have .ico files for icons, usually. ico files have only 1-bit transparency, I think. Definitely not full alpha transparency, like on Linux or Mac, but it is "transparency".

Yeah, as stalefries said, the icons are definitely transparent. I think its just cos ur using a browser like Internet Explorer   which doesnt support transparency. Window Explorer doesn't support transparent PNGs either if i correctly remember. Anyway, this icon does have a transparent T:

As you can see, the bit under the T is also showing, notice the bolt?
If you want to see straight throught the whole icon, I have to do a boolean operation so its a cut through.

I might try a boosted version of the icon now.

EDIT: Like this?

I know what I am talking about, .ICO can't be partially transparent, each pixel must be 100% opacity , or 0% opacity.

I am not talking about .PNG or .GIF, those aren't icons those are images and they serve no purpose as they CANT be used as icons.

however since were on this topic, .PNG can be partially opacity so you can kind of see through, but kind of not, and .GIF can only be 100% opacity or 0% opacity like .ICO, and then last, .JPG+.BMP Cant be transparent at all.

The reason why when you scroll up to mine its a .PNG is because you cant show .ICO on basic forums, so thats why it includes a download link on my post.

If you guys are looking for a way to change an image into a .ICO download a plugin for photoshop (photoshop users only) http://www.telegraphics.com.au/sw/

for all the other program users, you can probably find a program to transform the basic image files into .iCOs

It would look better taking the lightning out from the back, and making the T thats on red part more alien and Organic looking while the other half thats on blue more geometric and blue.

And having it just red makes it look really bad,

I wont be doing anymore icons btw.

waste of time.
