Constructive Criticism or Get Lost

Enough saying to people that their work looks like crap.
Anyone can do that. Start attempting to help the few newbies out here that need a few months (probably a year or two) to become proficient in modeling.

Tremulant

It seems a little redundant, as it goes without saying, but maybe this needs to be stickied anyway.

just because Lava Croft isn't active any more doesn't give people the go-ahead to post crap that they barely spent 20 minutes on. :P

So I should spend 20 minutes elaborating paragraphs upon paragraphs on how you shouldn't flame newbies who put out their first models?

Demolution

No, but we should flame the ones who say PUT DIS IN 1.2 PLOX!

I'm all for! Writing something like "OMgZ U r NuBZZ, ur m0dels 5uck lol" will not help the newbie become a pro! I want this to be stickied!

People like that will always be around, no matter what you say.

and if your model is terrible and someone says shit, you should take it as a challenge and read tuturials/try harder.. not whine about what they said.

No Sticky, to each their own.

Pazuzu

How about a compromise: People can say that a model sucks, but only if they describe in detail why it sucks.

If you're up for it, creep some old mapping/modding threads by YourFace or Brain. They used to release (relatively shitty) maps like it was going out of style, and they got a fair amount of shit for it. They both decided to ignore that and keep mapping and now they're competent mappers with some good maps and tutorials out there. The problem with mapping and modeling is that not everyone is fit to do it. It's a difficult thing to become good at and most people who start will simply never get anywhere. The people who will get somewhere are usually the ones who see that what they've created is crap and nooby and keep it to themselves. Anyone who releases their first model deserves to be flamed, especially if they think it's good (if only to teach them some common sense), and if they quit because of some negative criticism, they shouldn't be modeling anyway.

TL;DR: People will say your model sucks if it sucks.

Drag222

Saying people their models looks like crap when it looks like crap is not a bad criticism, it's an honnest one, although it would be a plus if people could say how it could be improved and what's wrong with it, that's how you make people get better.

UniqPhoeniX

Being able to ignore a page full of comments of "omg ur map/model sux!!!1!!1" is not a requirement to improving/becoming good at mapping/modeling, even tho it helps. Constructive criticism is always better than flaming or just saying it sux. Even saying "you should practice more, and don't release your first map/model" is a lot more helpful.
We don't have to have only those who can take the all the flames mapping/modeling, it would help if more people would start and continue to at least practice, even if they can't get any of their maps/models on servers for a while. Also this community is dead enough, no reason to make it worse (nor any reason to let the trolls make it worse).

swamp-cecil

i stopped modeling not because i was negatively critisized. i just plain suck.

This. I'm working on a Blender tutorial to model a character, and even though I get how I'm supposed to smooth out the face, I just don't really know where to put each vertex.

A beginner should recognize, though, that (s)he is a beginner. A lot of the models that are posted here are tutorial-level quality and someone who thinks those are something to be posted and asked for criticism is about is someone who, in my opinion, isn't fit for modeling. Someone who doesn't recognize what looks like crap isn't going to be able to improve, since they don't see how much room for improvement they've got. (And with much of the models here, looking like crap is not simply a matter of oh, you've just got to go up a few more subdivision levels or oh, you've just got to optomise the polys, it's a matter of what the fuck is that supposed to be? a tyrant?!) Of course, there's no sure-fire way to tell if someone will be working on the CoD8 or Minecraft Beta, but there are a lot of things that are, at least, signs, and I think that posting horrible models is one of them.

This. Many people when they create their first map/model feel like it's much better than it really is, just because they made it, and some want to show it. Perhaps already the next day/week they will know a bit better, but it's difficult to properly judge your own work at the very start. However as their skills improve, they will start to understand the quality of their work better. But still, looking back after a long time of improving you might judge what you honestly thought had to be great as crap, as it's all relative to your understanding of how good a map/model can be and how far what's being judged really is from that.

Perhaps a modeling specific Random Dev Shots can replace some of the threads with just posts tho.

I'm still a moron when it comes to 3D:

I need to learn organic modeling to get photo-realistic humans, aliens and such.

Advanced materials for photo-realistic human head or such...

I want to become good at animation, I am only scratching by and want to preform.

I scratched the surface on postpro(node tree etc), I am barely there.

I'm not good enough to make photo-realistic organic character like a tiger or whatever.
I know how but it will take a lot of time to get something that won't induce laughter.

Python is supposed to open a new realm of control, I don't know it at all.

I barely know to use the particle system, I know but don't know how to apply it to the real world decently.

I only know a fat portion of Blender, ugh the rest are little features that I don't know that would have probably saved me hours if not days of ripping my hair out.

UV unwrapped and texture painting so i can do photo-realistic human busts, monsters, and such.

3D sculpting, I can't do a decent head.

And..... I want to get my foot into the door of a higher grade animated short but need work to who first .
So I've been dumping time into work to make a demo reel.. Eventually it will be done... I hope.
Plus in my dreams I'll be doing freelancing within a few years.

Boy I have a way to go, I'll check back in 2 years and see if I meet my goals  ??? :o

Anyways if you just want to model give it a few months, but you get the idea.

-Organics follow a pretty simple pattern- subdivide, add edge loops, move edge loops, repeat. They just take forever. I recommend using 2D references (make concept art).
-Are you sure you don't mean "UV unwrapping and texturing" when you say "advanced materials"?
-The key to animation is rigging, which is a pain in the ass but makes that actual animation insanely easy.
-See first comment
-Python is overrated. Only learn it at the very end if you still think you need it.
-There are some good particle tutorials on the Blender wiki.
-The bit at the end of my post will help you with this.
-Ah yes, UV unwrapping. That's going to suck.
-There are tricks for the head...

I found a Blender 2.5 training course on BlenderCookie (I think) that models a complex character and covers most of the stuff you wanted. The bad news is that it's $60 to download, but what you learn should apply to other programs too. Actually, BlenderCookie will help you with most of these. Check it out.

Sorry I am tired out, I apologize in advance for anything I missed or bad grammar.

Animation isn't easy, check out the 11 second club and try getting anything close.
I want to enter in sometime and place something other than last place.
Using a good rig is half the battle the other half is breathing life into it.
I've used mancandy, it's great bland rig that works.

Organics...
They are far from uv unwrapping.
http://blenderartists.org/forum/showthread.php/198835-Realistic-head-test
Skim the thread and you get the idea.

For modeling organics.
The mesh might look right but the topology has a "way" for certain parts of the body sot hat rigging works well and to keep clean mesh. Unless you sculpt...
I need to get human form down decently and it will take time.
I need to learn the tricks :)

Particles are very complex, big buck bunny is a choice example.
A half dozen hours of messing around should help gain familiarity and some strength in that area.
But I would like a finished monster or something that I could show off sometime...

Python is probably overrated but learning some to limp around might be a decent idea in the future.

I might buy the tutorial but will probably scrounge around and find pieces of info...
