Just get it into your head: As long as you don't pay for any service rendered, you have no right to make any kind of demands. Any server may revuse to serve you, and there no F* thing you can do about it.

satgnu is an international server so i think the only language used there should be english cuz its most international lang (lol i could just start another war - why not french or german :O)

And, cave... Demands and saying what you mean without bleeping censoring yourself is 2 different things, after all, what makes any server live, is the players who populate it, which means you have to keep them happy, or they will move another place.

I do agree with you that they have no right to be angry after making failed "demands", they should rather bleep off to somewhere else..

I don't think the Euro servers have as much problem with BR as American servers do.  And yes some of them do play like griefers and can't understand your requests to stop.

I personally prefer max ping to weed out unwanted players, but I guess a Euro server can't do that if they're trying to block other Europeans.

Basjefar, I agree with you. But if you just don't have the manpower or dont care to fend off a take-over, this is the way to go. Shooting at where the most trouble is coming from.
I also agree that there is a lot of colateral damage, but I think they weighted both and found the colateral worth it.

Mind you, I am not saying the same will happen on AW/HW. We don't believe in clan liability and take more pains to ensure that offenders that repeatedly get on our nerves stay away from us.
But that is just us.

As for keeping the player-base happy... that certainly is as double-edged theme .)
In our case we did not put the server up for the community, we placed it for our members that wanted one and we have no trouble with it, if it get's less popular. (remember, we have just 3 rules... a) English only b) no foul language / no insults c) common sense)
If enforcing these 3 rules make the server unattractive to others, we have no quarrel with those that can't / will not abide, as we have no desire to play with/against ppl that a) speak in a laguage we don't understand b) keep on swearing or c) have no common sense.
Face it, those that try to stick to our rules are the ones we like to play with (not necessarily only on our server) and we found some new friends while sticking out for what we believe to be a solid base to get a game going.

And if somebody absolutely has to curse to speak his mind freely, I will not stand by and listen to him/her. If he has not been taught to speak properly w/o offending others I can not see him/her becoming a friend or having fun with him/her playing against. And if I/we have no fun playing on our own server,  there just is no use keeping the server up, is there?

Quick statistic, just for today:
AW has now 39 perm-bans,
3 were from before today,
2 were issued after "Fuck off, I speak like I want to"
4 were deconner,
that leaves 30 others clients that were banned because they ignored 2 times "cp ^3stick to English here", ignored the following !mute.

And while I was writing this the next "kurva kurva" has been muted.

That shows that a) satgnu did work as a filter for those ignorants and b) that I now understand the pressure satgnu was under even better.

Server owners can do with their server what they like. They can even ban people for having the word spider in their name. Its their right, and nothing will change that.
But players do have the right to have an opinion about servers and about how they are maintained.

I like how some servers like Alien Wrath are managed, even before this topic, i was having much more fun on servers like these. The gut is always right, SatGNU and some of their admins is just not for me.

I am not a longtime player yet, and not sure if i will be. But I have seen players that are helpful, and i have seen assholes. Eeeew Spiders is only frequenting the servers where attitude wise healthy players are at, and as long as you have servers full with a whole bunch of them, who needs SatGNU.
These are by coincident also the servers with admins that do the admin job as it is supposed to be done. Is probably a gift of some server owners to pick the right admins. Thanks for that, and thanks for your great servers. Luckely we still have plenty of those, and as long as we have them, i guess Tremulous will rock.

Oh and Bev... those lazy impotend Admins, as you like to call them, they are the ones that pay for the server, so STFU. And if you'd really knew what 's going on, you'd know that it is NOT the first server to ban by country/ip-ranges. It is just the first server to announce it.
You might want to talk to other server-owners a bit more and not stick just to your own small plate.

When I was saying about incompetent admins, I meaned those with rank 3 or 4, who comes out from regular players, not the server owners..
Yes, I've heared about banning by ip ranges but only in cases, when there were attacks launched on the server from that ip range, not just becouse of group of bad behaving players. If you know about such cases, please let me know them too.
About ban announciation: this threat not only informs fellow polish SatGnu regulars about that they have to ask in personal for permission to enter the server, but also sends to other members of community clear signal, that is something really not cool with polish players. I'm afraid that may build up stereotypes of polish players as a grievers.

#Satgnu has recently decided not to totally <BAN> Poland, we will be just redirecting those IPs to Aliens Wrath, since it is the best server in the world and we want the ppl there have a quality time.

sorry for swearing, its not a very regular habit of mine, but it has worsened after reading Transmetropolitian (which is an awesome comic).

Still, do you not think less players would hurt any server just a bit, even if it has a stable player base, it could lead to for example aliens wrath not being full all the time. But since you were not the ones banning poland, it is off topic. ^^

You are kidding right? all of them? I have to differ with you. It was polish players like rasz_pl that I saw giving tips in how they can improve their game to new players like me.

You are right in that server owners can make up rules as they wish, some rules are still racist or discriminating. Banning people for having blue eyes is a discriminating/racist act. But do as you like.
I am personally just wondering why it had to be solved in the way it was done. Polish players have to ask for special permission? Sounds like a visa policy to me.
There are plenty of other options how this could have been dealt with. Each and every single one is better in all aspects.

1. You could have required registration for all players based on their client GUID. This would also solve the problem of deconners and other trolls. This system could even be extended into a karma system.

2. Have a cross server borders karma system. Every server authenticates its players against a global authentication server. This means also that someone ignoring server rules and gets banned for that, is automatically band from the other servers too. This will stop players from acting deconstructive. Now they just go to another server when they get banned from one. With global authentication, they can't.

3. have better admin coverage


These solutions require a lot more work, I agree, still i don't see why to sanction racist rules introduced by laziness of admins and server owner of SatGNU. But atleast you wouldn't need to have lava_croft send out the signal of how she thinks about poland

One question: WHY would someone like an ADMIN do this WORK for ppl that annoy the server? WHY?
WHY if you can have the same effect by a simple set of ip-tables?
WHY would an admin choose a complicated and time consuming solution if he can get what he wants the other way?

Lava Croft is one hot chick  But I am not in disagreement with this decision.  MG Central had a group from Poland every morning and I would typically play a match before work with them (months back), it was quite fun.  Since that time, I have seen a great number of apparently Polish griefers.  Now we have reports of people getting vote kicked at night when no admins are on.  Kicked as they join, mind you, Not for griefing.  I join and they start warning each other that I'm an admin and swearing at me in Polish (I worked in the restuarant industry, I can probably swear in 12 different languages though I barely speak english :p )  I hear all this and think, it is time to go!

If any of these morons want to know what racism actually is, take a trip to America.  This whole racism series of accusations is just fscking stupid.  A game server taking protective measures against a large group of known griefers who happen to originate from Poland != racism.

Global antispam blacklists have no qualms at all to blacklisting a whole country if some big spammer uses their IP range. This is a simple tremulous server when there are a LOT of them available. It shouldn't cause that much controversy.
