nubcake, I think what he was originally getting at is that you definitely have not kept up with the latest development happenings and that 1.2 is in no way years away :)

Well forgive me for being in that frame of mind.... Anyways, the ORIGINAL subject I wanted to talk about was a community based project with devs blessing. What say ye khalsa?

Like they are going to give carte blanche blessing to a currently non-existent project where the only detail we have is a massive collaboration that's going to be really really hard to do.

Lots and lots of people have done projects without any dev blessing or involvement.
Any maps not in the MG repo?  Email me or come to irc.freenode.net/#mg.

Perhaps the fact that so much work goes into them with so little praise (perhaps 10 or 11 good job comments) that people lose motivation to go into them. It takes all of 5 minutes to link a page to a project from the devs... thats not too much to ask.

How many projects do you see still around, 2 or 3? After all the years... people may be more inclined to work these projects thoroughly if they knew the project would get some spotlight and SOME play, rather than whisping off into the void of the mercenaries server

You know, if the project turns out to be any good, it'll be in a future community spotlight, and 1.2 should already favor mods more then 1.1.

You know, nubcake, you should really have something to showcase before making bold statements like that... with how small the trem community has become now, it's amazing that projects receive that much praise anyways. :p

Surely you have seen the 20 or so maps I have made, or the help I give other mappers....

Projects need official backup to go anywhere after being released. For example, HOW many custom maps do you see being played by more than just a handful of players? It is the same old atcs atcs atcs atcs on the top 5 servers, always. I have asked the admins of these servers if they would like new maps, and they ALL say yes! They need something of quality, something players will publicly know about and WANT to play and then things will start to change and people will be PLEASED in joining a 32 player game on something other than ATCS

THEY ALL SAY YES? There are plenty of good quality maps. I'm pretty sure it's only those server owner's faults for not putting custom maps into their maprotation. I don't see how this would make things different. If a server owner wants to put custom maps in their server than they would do so...

Ok Moose, you're completely right and im wrong. I am sorry for trying to do something positive. I am sure we would all be better off not doing anything like this. Happy?

You are partially correct But he is partially correct too. Server admins do want custom maps But they also don't want to lose players ( s/players/noobs who have no clue about auto downloads/ ). They admins would place them if they were not custom( lol? ) OR if there was an official client that supported web downloads, had an option to toggle it, and forced players to set their name etc...

As far as our servers, we have had consistently bad player feedback from a lot of new maps.  A lot of them seem to have been made more for their artistic value than their playability.  I think if you take a look at ATCS and ask why it was so successful, you might get a few of these answers.

Its small.  You dont have to go 2 miles wandering through an unfamiliar map to try to even find the enemy.  Part of the novelty of Trem is it's fast paced gameplay, and if the map detracts from that it ends up being a failure.  Also the smaller map means better server performance.  I remember when i first started playing trem years ago really liking uncreation, but every time we played it the servers would lag.  Cool map, great design (i thought), but it just didnt work so well with trem.   True, large maps dont lag on some servers.. but we have an average of 20-25 people on the servers, sometimes upwards of 35+ people.   I remember DSpro Arena (or whatever it was called) having some success, but i noticed with that map it was still didnt seem to have tremulous gameplay in mind.

If you map devs want better success with your maps, remember K.I.S.S.

cheers!

how about making better water effects for tremulous like in half life 2 there is frenzel effects and reflections, refractions, etc. how can you go wrong when you see an alien swarming in the water when right away they can detect you but then they have to see you better so they try and take a closer look when, BAM! you get shot for being under water or BAM! he fucks you up for hiding in the water (anyone want to join my dev company) I need help (http://luneair.webs.com) I wouldn't say it's advertising because all I need is help and theres nothing advertising about help now is there.

i hope if something like this was implemented, that it wouldn't affect my FPS.

my computer is damn slow, and i'd hate to not be able to play this game due to fancy add-ons :/

if anything, i would love to see simpler models and such for slow computers... at least an option for it :)

The good news I have for you on this wonderful day, is seeing as the engine that trem uses is as ancient as it is, your dinosaur computer will more than likely still work... And besides, if 1.2 just becomes too much graphically for you (I dont see how anything the Devs will release will be that damn different) then feel free to keep using 1.1, just like 90% of the Trem community... After all, that is what the most people use... Why worry about what is not coming... I mean... What is called 1.2...

Yes, if only the dev team would release a proper, official client that worked properly "out of the box".... *sigh* it's only been 4 years.

I too, as a Game Operator on GameArena dare not add new maps to the server because the official 1.1 client does not support fast downloads of maps. There's a contingent of the gaming community that are not geeks and linux guru's and they don't know how to "play" with their computer so they are reluctant to download other clients and "mess" with their installation.... ergo they drop out every time UTCS is voted on. What the dev team have essentially been saying to these people for the last 3 years is "FU, if you can't update your client to TJW's we don't want you".

We need a decent Wiki for Newbies. I am willing to help on that.
And thank you, Khalsa for bringing new energy to this place.

There is already a wiki. Perhaps a newbie section would be handy?

Hello im new to this website. I got because i was asking the website xserverx.com about Tremulous if they would improve their graphics because its been the same for how many years. I know the developers do not always listen to peoples advices or suggestion but i just want to give it a try. I asked previously on the other website if tremulous graphics would be improved and if tremulous could become more famous as it is right now. I know that money = fame, so they told me that Tremulous is a FLOSS (Free open source) game and yet you may play it on Ubuntu(Linux), Windows or Mac which means its a little bit famous. People outside do not really know tremulous because they different games such as Starcraft or Minecraft or Warcraft...etc. So i was just asking for now if the graphics will become better since i doubt that tremulous might become more famous.

Yes, the graphics will get improved, and quite a bit has already been accomplished. I won't go into detail, but if you are curious yourself you can check out this thread...

I thought this was supposed to be about the web site/forum.

It would be nice to have some more links at the top of the website, because just from the forum here, it takes some going around to get to a page with a side-bar, with the right links I'm looking for.

So you can't navigate any site that doesn't have a sidebar?

I'm just saying if people were a little nicer and made things more convenient, like any reasonable person would, more people might like this game. I can't and don't want to navigate any site that has inappropriate or missing links on it, or at the very least it's a pain, and shows a lack of design and organization. A site should be convenient and easy to use and navigate from wherever you may be on it, especially concerning the most important pages of it.

To some degree, there's also laziness involved. It's unfriendly if a site is difficult to navigate, and you can't find what you're looking for right away. Most people are unwilling to really go out of their way to navigate a site that doesn't have the right links in the right places, be it links at the top of the page or in a nice little sidebar. You  could call this laziness on the part of the visitor, but they are a "guest" after all. It's to be expected to a degree, if you ever hope for more.

Of course, based on your remark, I can see a great deal of laziness and bitterness on behalf of whoever is responsible and in charge of these things, which mainly includes the community that decides how things should be (yes...that means you specifically). Do you even have a good reason for behaving this way? Did someone kick you in the rear recently.... or perhaps they forgot to do so recently, and you miss the feeling?

Now, I didn't want to go into all this, or even be mean at all (trying VERY hard to put it politely and nicely), but when you act so rude to anyone that makes a simple observation, especially someone trying to help, you deserve to be treated similarly or in the same way as you treat others... and you should expect it. Keep that in mind the next time you comment... and do try to think, especially before you say anything ... that's what a brain is for, after all, even though you seem to use it as a seat cushion. ;)

So, you think the entire community it out to get you, and is responsible for deliberately designing the site to piss you off, and you're venting your victim complex/conspiracy theories here by insulting all of us.
Good luck with whatever you're trying to do.
